The laser module is precision-calibrated by its manufacturer, and the housing is produced to a high dimensional accuracy so that the laser's alignment is held true relative to the magnetic base. Every tool is assembled, function-tested and individually checked for beam alignment before dispatch: each unit is set on a flat reference surface and the beam height is measured close to the source and again at approximately one metre, confirming the beam runs parallel to the base. Four adjustment screws allow the laser's position to be corrected if required. These are set on assembly and are not user-service items — they should not be altered in normal use, and adjustment should only be considered if the tool has been dropped or knocked hard enough to throw the beam visibly out of true.

Laser product: Do not look directly into the laser beam, and do not point it toward the eyes of any person or animal. This is an alignment tool, and should be used as such. Turn it on only once it is in correct position on the rear sprocket. Laser light can cause eye injury even at low power and even in brief exposures. Always switch the tool off when it is not in use, and be aware of where the beam is directed when you switch it on.

Keep the tool away from children. Do not use it near reflective surfaces where the beam may be redirected unpredictably.
Park the motorcycle on level ground, ideally on a paddock stand or centre stand so the rear wheel is stable and the chain is in its normal running position. Make sure the chain has correct slack before checking alignment - a chain adjusted outside its specified range can give you a misleading reading. Clean any heavy grease or road grime from the outer face of the rear sprocket, as debris under the base will affect accuracy.
The magnetic base is deliberately strong

This can make the batteries sit tightly in their compartment and difficult to extract by hand.

To remove them, open the compartment (turn anticlockwise) and tap the tool firmly against the palm of your hand, compartment facing downward. The batteries will release and drop clear. A few firm taps are normally sufficient - there is no need to lever them out with a screwdriver or other tool, which risks damaging the contacts or the housing.

Insert new batteries into the battery compartment

Observe the correct polarity as marked. Ensure they are seated fully before closing the tool. The batteries used for this tool are LR41 type.
1. Position the tool on the sprocket.

Place the base of the tool flat against the outer face of the rear sprocket, with the base sitting squarely on the sprocket's machined surface. On steel sprockets the magnetic base will hold the tool in place automatically. On aluminium and other non-magnetic sprockets, the tool has to sit firmly and squarely against the sprocket face - the reading is equally accurate. This tool can also be used on belt drives, although a ruler measurement may be required to check the alignment correctly.

Take a moment to confirm the base is sitting flush. Any rock or tilt in the base will translate directly into an inaccurate beam line.

2. Switch on the laser.

The beam will project forward, running parallel to the plane of the rear sprocket / pulley.

3. Read the alignment.

Observe where the beam falls in relation to the chain and the front sprocket. When the rear wheel is correctly aligned, the beam will run true and parallel along the line of the chain. If the beam diverges from the chain line - falling inboard or outboard as it travels forward - the rear wheel is out of alignment.

4. Adjust the rear wheel.

Loosen the axle and adjust the chain adjusters, making small, equal corrections and re-checking the beam after each adjustment. Work in small increments; large corrections tend to overshoot.

5. Confirm and finish.

Once the beam runs true along the chain, re-check your chain slack, then tighten the axle nut to your manufacturer's specified torque. Re-check the beam one final time after torquing, as tightening the axle can shift the wheel slightly. Switch the laser off.

Important: always verify chain slack and axle torque against your motorcycle manufacturer's specifications before riding. This tool assists with alignment; final assembly and safety checks remain the rider's responsibility.
The beam looks correct but the bike still tracks oddly.

Chain alignment is only one factor in how a motorcycle tracks. Check wheel bearings, swingarm bearings, and that the front and rear wheels are aligned to each other.

The reading changes between checks.

Confirm the base is clean and sitting flush, the chain slack is correct, and the bike is on level ground with the suspension in a consistent position.

The tool won't hold on the sprocket.

Your sprocket is likely aluminium or another non-magnetic material. The tool has to sit flush against the sprocket face - accuracy is unaffected.

The laser is dim or won't switch on.

Replace the batteries, checking polarity.
Your tool arrives precision-calibrated. Four calibration screws set the alignment of the laser relative to the base, and these are adjusted and verified as part of final assembly.

Do not adjust these screws in normal use. They are not a user setting, and altering them will take the tool out of the calibration it was supplied with. Under ordinary workshop handling, the calibration will hold.

The only circumstance in which adjustment should be considered is if the tool has been dropped or struck hard enough that the beam is visibly and significantly out of true. If you believe this has happened, please contact us before attempting any adjustment - we can advise on the correct procedure, or arrange for the tool to be re-calibrated.
